Types of surge arresters – match the protection level

  • Type 1 (Class B) – protection against direct lightning strikes, used at the entrance to the building, usually in facilities with a lightning protection system.
  • Type 2 (Class C) – protection against induced or indirect surges, installed in the main distribution boards of residential and industrial buildings.
  • Type 3 (Class D) – additional protection close to receivers (e.g., computers, controllers, RTV), used in conjunction with types 1 and 2.

How do surge arresters work?

Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) detect a sudden increase in voltage and redirect excess energy to ground in a fraction of a second, before it reaches sensitive installation components. They operate on the principle of spark gaps, varistors, or suppression diodes, depending on the design and protection level. Regular use of SPDs significantly reduces the risk of equipment failure, fires, or damage to electrical infrastructure.

 

Where should surge arresters be used?

Such protection should be included in every electrical distribution board – in single-family homes, multi-family buildings, as well as industrial and office facilities. They are particularly recommended for installation in locations with high concentrations of electronic devices or where there is a risk of lightning-induced surges. Surge arresters are often combined with other protection elements, such as differential current circuit breakers or overcurrent circuit breakers.
